Equities Global equity markets rose 0.4% (in € terms) in October. Markets were down early in the month as economic data in both Europe and the U.S. again disappointed. However investors reacted positively by mid-month with the announcement of a ‘substantial, phase one’ trade deal between the U.S. and China which included Chinese promises to purchase more U.S. agricultural products while the U.S. cancelled planned tariff increases on Chinese imports which were due to start on 15th...

Equities Global equity markets rose 3.4% (in € terms) in September, with investors continuing to focus on the fluctuations of the U.S./China trade war and its consequences for an already slowing global economy. Talks took place during September with some progress reported and they will resume in early October with U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, and Trade Representative Lighthizer, due to meet with Chinese Vice Premier Liu. However, it is not certain at all if any deal can resolve U.S....

Equities Global equity markets fell 1.1% in August (in € terms). The month opened with markets falling after President Trump announced new tariffs on Chinese imports effective from 1st September. China duly responded as the month progressed announcing new tariffs on U.S. oil, auto and agricultural imports. The U.S. also described China as a ‘currency manipulator’ following a sharp fall in the value of the Chinese yuan against the US$. It remains unclear when, or if, talks will resume...

Equities Global equity markets rose in July, up 2.7% (in € terms). The month started well with U.S. markets reaching record highs after the U.S. and China agreed, at the G20 summit in Japan, to resume trade talks later in July in Shanghai. All was relatively quiet until near month-end when President Trump tweeted his views on the lack of progress, with China responding in kind. However, talks will resume in the U.S. next month although there remain significant areas of contention still...

Equities Global equity markets rose 4.3% (in € terms) in June. After the sharp falls seen in May, markets started the month strongly especially after weaker-than-expected U.S. employment figures with investors believing that the Federal Reserve may now cut interest rates as early as July. This view strengthened following the Fed’s meeting later in the month, with its language on economic growth changing from a ‘solid rate’ to a ‘moderate pace’. ECB President Mario Draghi also said on...

Equities -  Global equity markets fell sharply in May, down 5.2% (in € terms). The month started well with some markets hitting record highs in the first week after a stronger-than-expected U.S. employment report. However, investor sentiment turned quickly following President Trump’s announcement that tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese imports would increase from 10% to 25%. China duly responded by raising tariffs on $60 billion worth of U.S. goods to between 10% - 25%, starting in June....

Equities Global equity markets rose in April, up 3.7% (in € terms). Markets continued to move ahead after a very strong Q1, with better-than-expected economic data released during April for the Eurozone, U.S, U.K. and especially China reassuring investors. Q1 GDP growth for China was 6.4%, ahead of expectations, as the stimulus measures introduced last year appear to be working. This should be good news for European exporters. Corporate earnings were strong, although expectations...

Global equity markets rose 2.6% (in € terms) in March. The ECB announced that it would not raise interest rates until 2020 at the earliest and also said that it will offer banks a new round of cheap loans in order to help revive the Eurozone economy following continuing weak economic data for the region. The U.S. Federal Reserve also announced that it will not raise interest rates this year partly due to a slowing economy but also now more mindful of increasingly fragile investor...

Global equity markets rose over February, up 3.5% (in € terms). Investors remained positive following the sharp market rises in January, and with hopes that the U.S./China trade talks would eventually see a deal struck. President Trump extended the deadline for increasing tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods following ‘substantial progress’ in the talks between themselves and China. Potential headwinds like Brexit, India/Pakistan/Kashmir and the abrupt end to the U.S./North Korea...

Global equity markets rose sharply in January, up 7.4% (in € terms), recovering some of the heavy losses seen in Q4 ’18. Following a bruising December, investors looked to the positives of generally solid, if slowing, global economic data (World Bank 2019 estimates GDP growth down to 2.9% from 3.0%) despite the various risks that still remain. The mood was generally upbeat on the U.S./China trade war, and with China’s economy slowing and President Trump always mindful of the direction of...
